This blog provides practical information and software for applying customizable patterns based on the ones distilled from the archetypal models for roman and italic type.
This research aims to prove that technical aspects of Renaissance font production had a direct influence on the proportions of roman and italic type, and with it the related conditioning that forms the basis of our perception.īlokland’s research not only provides more insight into the origin of Latin (movable) type, but the results can also be used for the production of current digital type, and even for the parametrization of type-design processes. For this, humanist handwriting was literally cast in intrinsic predetermined standardized proportions. Blokland’s ongoing research is being conducted to test the hypothesis that Gutenberg and his peers have developed a standardized and even unitized system for ‘designing’ and casting textura types, and that this system was in fact extrapolated for the production of roman type in Renaissance Italy. Perhaps this was also the case more than 500 years ago. In the practice of the current font designer there seems to be quite a bit of emphasis on technical matters, especially on (the standardization of) fonts and related data storage formats.
